UMAT Test help - Tips

Allocating your study time during year 12
Though “ACER and the UMAT Consortium
universities do not recommend or endorse any commercially available
courses offering UMAT preparation”, UMAT Prep courses
are available to aid the UMAT candidates with as much training
as is necessary to familiarize them with the style of the UMAT
questions. The additional practice allows students to adopt
the pattern of thinking which will be useful at the time of
the UMAT.
However, some UMAT candidates choose to undertake UMAT preparation
on their own and this is also recommended as an alternative
to running into the hall late on the day of the UMAT, suffering
the consequences of a previous night-out.
During Year 12, the UMAT candidate is faced with a multitude
of stresses: pressure from family and teachers to perform well
in assessments, pressure from him/herself to work consistently,
raging hormones at their peak, and all the usual punches life
throws at this most inconvenient time. The UMAT preparation
arises as an unfamiliar situation which the UMAT candidate has
never been faced with before. UMAT2008 will be held on Wednesday
30 July 2008, and UMAT2007 was held on Wednesday 25 July 2007.
The UMAT candidate therefore does not have a whole year to prepare
for this assessment.
Around July the mid-year exams arise and assignments are pouring
in. The student is left to decide whether they will have enough
time to do all the necessary preparation for their academic
subjects as well as the UMAT. If this is physically impossible
to do, the UMAT candidate must make sacrifices in the appropriate
places. It should be known that in most medical schools around
Australia, the academic results form only a third of the overall
selection criteria, and in some universities even a quarter.
This is not to say that they are not worth studying for. Some
universities have ENTER score cut-offs, such as the University
of Melbourne and Adelaide, where the UMAT candidates are not
even considered if their ENTER does not surpass 96. However
since it was introduced, the UMAT has played an increasing role
in the selection of the new generation of doctors. UMAT candidates
are awarded interviews at most medical schools based on their
UMAT scores, and the University of Newcastle places a particular
emphasis on well-balanced scores throughout the three sections
of the UMAT. Ideally, the UMAT candidate should spend an hour
minimum a day practicing for the UMAT. Consistent work will
gain satisfactory results!
Hint: come interview prep time, sample Section II UMAT questions
are a great source of possible scenarios the interviewers may
spring on you on the day.
