Things to remember on the day of UMAT

Do not, under ANY circumstances, allow yourself to do a final check of the things you should bring with you to the venue on the LAST DAY.

Proper Identification

Speaking from personal experience, ensure that you have appropriate ID for the day, at least a week beforehand. Appropriate ID requires a recent photograph, name, date of birth and your signature. The only acceptable forms of ID are a current passport, a current driver’s licence or learner’s permit, a current keypass, proof of age card or 18+ card. Unfortunately, my school ID card did not have my signature on it. And it would have been enough to overlook this and I would not have been allowed to sit the UMAT in 2007. Fortunately I was scheduled for the 2pm UMAT session on the day (and not the one at 8am), so I was able to rush to my school and get a certified letter of identification from my principal (the only other acceptable form of ID).

UMAT Admission Ticket

Your UMAT admission ticket is your permission to attend the test. You must take it with you on the UMAT day. It will tell you where to report on the day of the UMAT, it will have your UMAT number on it and your personal details. Please do not forget it at home, as one of my friends did. She was convinced that she had placed her UMAT admission ticket in her handbag before she left home. It was a shock to her when she vigorously rummaged through her bag and found no UMAT ticket. She was even more surprised when her mother found it at home on her bed after my friend had called her for no other purpose but to reassure herself that it must, after all, be in her handbag. Tears of doom followed and I fulfilled my friend-duties by loyally patting her head, muttering “there-there”. Your UMAT admission ticket is your ticket to 3-4 hours of stress and resentment – my friend often jokes how she had subconsciously not wanted to sit the UMAT. She studies law now.

All jokes aside though, please remember to bring the UMAT admission ticket with you on the day. Do not put yourself in the position where your mother or father must leave work midday to rush the ticket over.

Pencils (medium soft HB or No.2) and eraser

I do not have a funny story about someone forgetting their pencil at home and not being allowed to be a doctor, so I’ll have to leave it at this. Bring your pencil to the UMAT day. However if you don’t, I’m sure someone will be able to lend you one on the day.

…and most importantly, bring yourself. NOT a caffeine-driven you, or a stressed-out, exhausted, with pressure up to the eyeballs, you. The UMAT day should be a fun experience, where you will meet other interesting UMAT candidates. I met a guy on my UMAT day, afterwards we ended up going out for coffee. He was not as interesting as I’d thought initially, but it was good coffee.
